Strife moba trailer8/8/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() This is S2 Games' second MOBA game aimed to a more casual player base than Heroes of Newerth, most notably incorporating various gameplay elements that focus on heavily reducing player toxicity and introducing persistent mechanics outside of the arena, including Pets and Crafting. Grab it here on Fanatical for £1.59/€1.74/$1.99.Strife was a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) video game developed by S2 Games. Many of these games are already cheap in the Steam Lunar New Year sale, but this bundle is the cheapest way to get them all. You can also steal fallen limbs from the battlefield and bodge together units from your dismembered foes, which I remember being rather satisfying. These big humanoid weapons need to be assembled from two arms, a pair of legs and a torso each, and the components determine what they can do in combat. You build bases, churn out tanks, and the occasional giant psueudo-anime robot. Recently updated to play nicer with modern machines by Night Dive, it's a pretty standard early 2000s real-time strategy game. Metal Fatigue is the odd one out of this bundle. One of the more awkward games to play in this bundle, though, even compared to the original System Shock. It did the 'hopping between the world of the living and dead' thing a year before Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver, and doesn't handle it quite as elegantly, but it does have some clever ideas hidden away in there. A quirky voodoo-themed action adventure that's equal parts unsettling and comically corny, or at least it was back when I first played it on the Dreamcast in 1999. Not really my genre, but I'll vouch for its impact. You may need a guide to get through some of the more obtuse puzzles, but its journey through five metaphorical virtual nightmare-worlds is a trip. Despite its sadism, he had a good time returning to the bleak, cruel world of Harlan Ellison's novel-turned-adventure. I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream is "a horrible game, made up of horrible scenarios, populated with a handful of horrible people and horribly punishing to play through", according to former RPS boffin Adam Smith in his retrospective piece on it here. This version is yet another remaster by Night Dive and includes a nice set of upgrades, including modern lighting, shadows and some fancier effects. Sharing a lot of code with the original Doom, it has fast, snappy combat and a fun comicbook post-apocalyptic world paired with branching dialogues and (in some cases) multiple mission solutions. ![]() Strife puts shooting first and thinking second, but was arguably ahead of its time in many ways, and holds up pretty well now if you don't mind the occasional labyrinthine sewer level. A good example of the many games inspired by Looking Glass's originals over the years. It's familiar immersive sim stuff, and sits nicely alongside the Shock games. A spooky spacecraft overrun with killer robots, mad science gone awry, limited ammo and puzzles to solve. Released just four years ago, it's a chunky low-poly tribute to System Shock. Spirits Of Xanadu isn't an old game, compared to the rest here. Lots of plot branches and alternate timelines to explore there, if you don't mind some awkward voice-acting. The biggest and most ambitious mod for it is System Shock Infinite, inspired by Bioshock Infinite's multiverse hopping. A huge infested spacecraft to explore, tons of weapons, skills and psionic powers to play around with, and mods if you're done with all that too. Some chunky character models aside (which can be replaced with more HD counterparts), it's up with the original Deus Ex as one of the best immersive sims out there. System Shock 2 aged better than the first. If you finish the game and want more to chew on, check out ReWired and Ruby Station, both on Mod DB and designed for easy use with the new version. Intriguingly, System Shock has only just developed a mod scene, too. Night Dive are currently remaking the first game, but gave its original DOS-era edition a bit of spit and polish just a few months ago. Without System Shock we'd have no Dishonored, Deus Ex or Prey. Both are classics of their time, and defined the immersive sim genre as we know it. The stars of the show here are undoubtedly the System Shock games. You also get dark point-and-click adventure I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream, N64-era platform explore-o-shooter Shadow Man and recently re-released mech RTS Metal Fatigue. ![]() The Ancestor Bundle over on Fanatical costs as much as a cup of coffee - cheap cafeteria stuff, not Starbucks - and gets you a bunch of immersive sims including both System Shock Games, Strife (the 90s one, not the MOBA) and the more recent Spirits of Xanadu. Some of you are still young, or just late to the party. Our audience may skew towards us old fogeys who remember the days of DOS memory management. ![]()

Howling wolf musician8/8/2023 ![]() But a change in Wolf's sound that would alter everything that came after was soon in coming because when listeners tuned in for Wolf's show, the sound was up-to-the-minute electric. As a means of advertising his own local appearances, Wolf had a 15-minute radio show on KWEM in West Memphis, interspersing his down-home blues with farm reports and like-minded advertising that he sold himself. After a four-year stretch in the Army, he settled down as a farmer and weekend player in West Memphis, AR, and it was here that Wolf's career in music began in earnest.īy 1948, he had established himself within the community as a radio personality. He first started playing in the early '30s as a strict Patton imitator, while others recall him at decade's end rocking the juke joints with a neck-rack harmonica and one of the first electric guitars anyone had ever seen. ![]() The main source of Wolf's hard-driving, rhythmic style on harmonica came when Aleck "Rice" Miller ( Sonny Boy Williamson) married his half-sister Mary and taught him the rudiments of the instrument. Though he never came close to learning the subtleties of Patton's complex guitar technique, two of the major components of Wolf's style ( Patton's inimitable growl of a voice and his propensity for entertaining) were learned first hand from the Delta blues master. His father was a farmer and Wolf took to it as well until his 18th birthday, when a chance meeting with Delta blues legend Charley Patton changed his life forever. He was born in West Point, MS, and named after the 21st President of the United States (Chester Arthur). King certainly more technical expertise, but no one could match him for the singular ability to rock the house down to the foundation while simultaneously scaring its patrons out of its wits. ![]() A Robert Johnson may have possessed more lyrical insight, a Muddy Waters more dignity, and a B.B. Six foot three and close to 300 pounds in his salad days, the Wolf was the primal force of the music spun out to its ultimate conclusion. In the history of the blues, there has never been anyone quite like the Howlin' Wolf. ![]()

Difference of raster and vector8/8/2023 ![]() While Adobe Illustrator is primarily a vector-based program, it has some raster-only elements available, such as drop shadows or outer glows. Likewise, Adobe Photoshop now allows you to work with vector-based objects (called smart objects) within the traditionally raster-based program. Raster in Illustrator? Vector in Photoshop? What? This means they can’t handle certain styling effects, like blurring or a drop shadow, that are available with raster images. Limited Effects: By definition, vector graphics are created from simple points and lines.Sure, you can create basic color gradients, but you’ll never be able to match the color detail available in a raster image where each individual pixel can be its own individual shade. Limited Details: Because of the mathematically way that a vector remembers data, they are not practical for complex images that require exact coloring.Edibility: Unlike popular raster-based formats, such as a jpg or png, vector files are not “flattened.” When you open ‘em back up in a program such as Adobe Illustrator, all of the original shapes exist separately on different layers this means you can modify individual elements without affecting other objects in the image. For simple graphics, like geometric shapes or typography, this means a much smaller file size and faster processing speed. Smaller File Size: Using our previous 1” x 1” square example, a vector file needs only four points of data to recreate a square versus 300 individual pixels for a raster image.Whereas a raster image must guess the colors of missing pixels when sizing up, a vector image simply uses the original mathematic equation to create a consistent shape every time. Infinitely Scalable: Through the wonders of math (which I don’t claim to understand), vector files can be scaled up or down as much as you want without losing any image quality.Popular vector file format extensions include: eps, ai and pdf. The designer’s preferred program for creating and editing vector files? Adobe Illustrator. The most common types of vector graphics? Fonts and logos. So whereas a raster image of a 1” x 1” square at 300 dpi will have 300 individuals pieces of information, a vector image will only contain four points, one for each corner the computer will uses math to “connect the dots” and fill in all of the missing information. Large File Size: Remember how a 1” x 1” square at 300 dpi will have 300 individual points of color information for the computer to remember? Well let’s say you have an 18” x 24” photo- that’s 129,600 bits o’ info for a computer to process which can quickly slow down even the faster machine.Ī vector graphic uses math to draw shapes using points, lines and curves. This interpolation of data causes the image to appear blurry since the computer has no way of knowing the exact shade of colors that should be inserted. Why is this? Well, there are a finite number of pixels in all raster images when you enlarge a photo, the computer takes its best guess as to what specific colors should fill in the gaps. Blurry When Enlarged: The biggest downfall to raster images is that they become pixelated (aka grainy) when enlarged. So if you’re a true perfectionist, the level of editing and customization available in a raster image is almost limitless. Precise Editing: All of those individual pixels of color information can also be modified, one by one.The more dpi your image contains, the more subtle details will be noticeable. Say you’ve got a 1” x 1” square image at 300 dpi-that’s 300 individual squares of color that provide precise shading and detail in your photograph. Rich Detail: Ever wondered what the term “dpi” stands for? It means “dots per inch,” a measurement of how much detailed color information a raster image contains.Popular raster file format extensions include: jpg/jpeg, psd, png, tiff, bmp and gif. The designer’s preferred program for creating and editing raster files? You guessed it: Adobe Photoshop. The most common type of raster graphic? A photograph. But even professional designers, myself indluced, often use these two terms interchangeably.) ( Technically pixels refer to color blocks viewed on an electronic monitor where as dots refer to the ink dots on a printed piece. vector files (all while your client develops an über confused look on his face), just send ‘em the link to this easy-to-understand article instead.Ī raster graphic is an image made of hundreds (or thousands or millions) of tiny squares of color information, referred to as either pixels or dots. The next time you start blabbing on about the difference between raster vs. If you’re like me, the answer is about a bazillion. ![]() How many times have you tried to explain to your client why the logo from their website won’t work on their trade show booth? ![]()
